The Difference Between Hardwood & Softwood

Some people may be confused between the differences of hardwoods and softwoods. The terms are used to describe different species of woods: Oak and Ash are examples of hardwoods, whereas Pine and Spruce are examples of softwoods.

Why Should You Buy Hardwood Decking?

Hardwood is made from broadleaved trees and is often used as a decking material; one of the most popular species used as garden decking in the United Kingdom is Yellow Balau. This durable type of tropical hardwood is a great choice as it is easy to clean and maintain.

Our tropical hardwood decking boards are available to buy in 21 x 145 x 3.66m ribbed decking boards, which make them a great choice for a diverse range of garden decking projects. Also, it's noteworthy to remember that the Yellow Balau species is also extremely durable; potentially lasting for many years with frequent treatment. We recommend regular maintenance with a suitable oil product such as anti-UV decking oil in order to keep your hardwood decking looking great. The wood's colour is a mixture of various different warm colours including reds and golden browns. This colour will fade in time to a silver/grey, however if you would like to delay this process, an oil based decking treatment product and regular maintenance will help to postpone the colour change.

Additionally, please note that as this is a natural product, variances in colour and pin holes are perfectly normal and not uncommon occurrences. As such, they're not considered defects.

What About Softwood Decking?

Whilst hardwood decking will last far longer than softwood decking, there is an aesthetic appeal to softwood decking. However, as softwood decking does have issues with regards to rot and insects; so make sure any softwood used in your garden decking is treated to protect against both, such as our Scandinavian Pine softwood decking which is kiln dried and pressure treated with Tanalithe E. These two steps help to prevent damage from both rot and damage from insects.

Is The Wood From Pennyhill Timber Sustainably Sourced?

Wood is a fantastic material that can be used for a wide range of construction and garden landscaping projects. However, it's important to remember that wood is only a sustainable material if it comes from a renewable source, such as a sustainable forest.

As we are members of the FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) chain of custody schemes, you can have full confidence that all of our timber products have been ethically sourced from sustainable forests.
