What Type Of Wood Are Pennyhill Timber Scaffold Boards Made From?

Our Timber Scaffold Boards are made from European Spruce logs. This is a type of softwood and the boards have been graded and kite-marked so that they are suitable for use on site.

What's The Difference Between Softwood & Hardwood?

Softwood and Hardwood describe the trees form which timber comes from. Softwood timber comes from gymnosperm trees, such as European Spruce, from which our Timber Scaffold Boards are made. Another example of softwood timber is Pine. Gymnosperm trees allow their seeds to fall to the ground with no coverings. With the example of a pine tree, the seeds grow into hard cones which are then released into the wind. For the most part, softwood species of trees remain evergreen and are usually less dense, resulting in timber that is often easier to cut when compared to more dense hardwood. At first a less dense piece of timber may seem disadvantageous; however the extra density of hardwood does mean that the timber is more likely to split if you hammer nails into it; an issue that softwood does not share.

On the other hand, hardwood timber originates from angiosperm trees; this includes species such as Oak or Ash. In contrast to softwood timber producing trees, their seeds have a covering; ranging from fruits such as apples to hard shelled seeds such as acorns. Additionally whilst softwood trees are often evergreen, hardwoods normally lose their leaves annually and are also often slower growing when compared to gymnosperm trees.

Make Sure Your Timber Is Ethically Sourced

Timber is a fantastic construction material that can be used for a diverse range of projects; however, it is very important that you only choose ethically sourced timber products. After all, it is important to remember that wood is only a sustainable material if it is sourced from a renewable source; such as a sustainable forest.

Here at Pennyhill Timber, we are proud to be members of the FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) chain of custody schemes. So when you purchase timber from our online store, you can have full confidence that all of our timber products have been ethically sourced from sustainable forests.
