What Is Plywood?

Plywood is a construction material made from thin layers of wood veneer that are glued together. Plywood is in a family of manufactured engineered wooden boards, this includes medium-density fibreboard (commonly known as MDF) and particle board (also known as chipboard).

In plywood, each layer has the grain rotated up to 90 degrees (known as cross-graining) which reduces expansion and shrinkage of the board, and reduces the change of wood splitting when it is nailed in at the edges, resulting in a more consistent strength across all directions.

Hardwood Plywood From Pennyhill Timber

The hardwood throughout plywood that is available on our online store is constructed from eucalyptus which makes it a very durable product. These products should not be confused with cheaper products such as 'hardwood face' or 'popular core' products as the veneers found in our hardwood plywood are constructed from eucalyptus, which is a very durable material.

What Is The Difference Between Hardwood & Softwood?

Hardwood and softwood are two different species of wood. Hardwood is made from broadleaved trees, such as Oak or Ash, whereas softwood is made from trees such as Spruce or Pine. With regards to hardwood plywood, our selection of products are made from a type of hardwood known as Eucalyptus, unlike hardwood face or popular core products, our hardwood Eucalyptus plywood is a very durable material.

What Can This Type Of Plywood Be Used For?

Plywood is one of the most versatile construction materials available. It's used in almost every room of a house, from flooring, to walls, kitchen cabinets, and furniture. To say construction is dominated by plywood is perhaps an understatement. However, this product should not be confused with hardwood face or poplar core plywood. This product (hardwood plywood) conforms to BSEN636-2 and can be used confidently on applications such as floors, flat roofs, hoarding, partitions, and sheathings.

However, please remember that if you choose to use this material for external applications, it is important to note that all plywood used externally must be edge sealed and painted both side with a suitable sealer.
