The Difference Between Hardwood & Softwood

Some people may be confused between the differences of hardwoods and softwoods. The terms are used to describe different species of woods: Oak and Ash are examples of hardwoods, whereas Pine and Spruce are examples of softwoods.

Why Should You Buy Hardwood Decking?

Hardwood is made from broadleaved trees and is often used as a decking material; one of the most popular species used as garden decking in the United Kingdom is Yellow Balau. This durable type of tropical hardwood is a great choice as it is easy to clean and maintain.

Our tropical hardwood decking boards are available to buy in 21 x 145 x 3.96m ribbed decking boards, which make them a great choice for a diverse range of garden decking projects.

Yellow Balau: The Gold Standard of Natural Timber

Yellow Balau is a prestigious tropical hardwood renowned for its incredible durability and interlocking grain. It is naturally resistant to decay and insects, making it the premier choice for high-end UK garden projects.

  • Aesthetic: A rich mixture of warm reds and golden browns.
  • Lifespan: Potentially lasts 25+ years with proper maintenance.
  • Natural Traits: Tiny "pin holes" and color variations are normal characteristics of this species and proof of its organic origin.
  • Maintenance: To preserve its color, apply an anti-UV decking oil annually. Left untreated, it will weather to a sophisticated silver-grey.

Composite & Smartboard: Zero-Maintenance Performance

If you prefer the look of wood without the sanding, staining, and oiling, our composite range is the ideal solution.

  • Smart Duo: Dual-faced boards featuring a grained texture on both sides for maximum design flexibility.
  • Smartboard: An eco-friendly, solid composite board that feels like timber but is engineered to never rot, warp, or split.
  • Slip Resistance: Perfect for the damp UK climate, providing a safer, high-grip surface for families.

Additionally, please note that as this is a natural product, variances in colour and pin holes are perfectly normal and not uncommon occurrences. As such, they're not considered defects.

What About Softwood Decking?

Whilst hardwood decking will last far longer than softwood decking, there is an aesthetic appeal to softwood decking. However, as softwood decking does have issues with regards to rot and insects; so make sure any softwood used in your garden decking is treated to protect against both, such as our Scandinavian Pine softwood decking which is kiln dried and pressure treated with Tanalithe E. These two steps help to prevent damage from both rot and damage from insects.
